BRAC launches food and nutrition program in Buchanan

BUCHANAN, LIBERIA-The Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) has launched a two-year food and nutrition support program in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County.

The  Program Manager of BRAC Liberia, Jaraf  Eqbal, said: “The program is intended to support the poor and strengthen resilience in the country between October 2016 and September 2018”.

The US$1.5 million project is being funded by the European Union (EU), will also be implemented in Bomi, Margibi, Cape Mount, Montserrado, Bong and Counties.

Mr. Eqbal said it will also improve the food and nutrition security situation of vulnerable population groups, adding that the plan for capacity building is intended to achieve a resilient and sustainable production in the country.

The program according to the Liberian News Agency (LINA) was launched at the Grand Bassa County Office of the Ministry of Agriculture on Tuesday, 20, December 2016.

In remarks, Grand Bassa Agriculture Coordinator, Joyce Korvah, pledged government’s fullest support in making the program successful.

Madam Korvah, described the project as an opportunity for Liberians in the targeted counties, and urged all beneficiaries in their respective counties to take ownership of it.

BRAC was established 2008 in Liberia,  with the intend to help 360 most vulnerable  and households family engage in cash for work activities, while 1,625 “poor” would  receive training in poultry and livestock rearing, and build capacities of 5,200 smallholder farmers also get education on climate and  smart agriculture technologies.
