Eugene Shannon granted bail in Global Witness indictment

MONROVIA-Former Lands, Mines and Energy Minister, Eugene Shannon has been granted bail following his arrest and detention under the jurisdiction of Criminal Court ‘C’ in Monrovia over his involvement in the Global Witness saga.

Mr. Shannon was arrested Thursday, January 5, 2017, and brought under the jurisdiction of the court, but was placed in the custody of his wife, pending trial, when the bail was granted.

According to the Liberia News Agency (LINA), the former Energy Minister bailing in the in Sable Mining corruption case, by Criminal Court ‘C’ took place at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia yesterday.
The ex-Minister and other accused in the Sable Mining case are charged with Bribery, Economic Sabotage, Criminal Conspiracy, Criminal Solicitation and Criminal Facilitation by the Government of Liberia.

The former minister and E.C.B Jones, who at the time served as his deputy, are alleged to have received US$250.000 each from Sable Mining deal through a certain man named Andrew Groves.

“In accounting for this amount in the ‘West Africa Operation Weekly Income and Expense Sheet’ of Sable Mining, Shannon and Jones are referred to as ‘Big Boy I ‘and “Big Boy II” who received US$250.000 each,” LINA quoted the indictment.

The five-count indictment also said Shannon, Jones, Senator Morris Saytumah and Willie Belleh, are among other indictees who are said to have received a total of US$950,000 to change article ARTICLE 75 of the revised Public Procurement and Concession Commission Act to provide for “Non-bidding area “involving the iron ore rich Wologisi Mountain in Lofa County.

It is not clear whether the other indictees have been brought under the jurisdiction of the court.

It can be recalled that the Special Presidential Task Force investigating the recent Global Witness Report handed down a sealed indictment against the individuals involved in the report.
