ECOWAS’ position remains unchanged despite … President Sirleaf

MONROVIA-The Chairperson of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has reaffirmed and clarified that there can be no change in the position of ECOWAS’ position on The Gambian political deadlock.

“There is no change in ECOWAS Position on the political crisis in The Gambia. The Gambian constitution must be respected.”

President Sirleaf said that ECOWAS Position has since been conveyed to President Jammeh by ECOWAS Mediator, President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria.

The Liberian leader has however, described the secret recording of conversation against her by out-going Gambian President, as unfortunate.

President Sirleaf told BBC Tuesday, January 17, 2017 that she received from a phone call from Yahya Jammeh, without informing her that he was recording it.

“The Gambian leader called last Sunday requesting me as Head of ECOWAS Authority, to make an appeal to the ECOWAS leaders to make judges available to address the political impasse in The Gambia.”

According to the ECOWAS Chairperson, “hours after the telephone conversation President, Jammeh was reported to have broadcast the conversation on Gambian Radio and Television, and subsequently went viral on the internet.”
