The African Union Commission has contributed U$50,000 to the Grand Bassa Community College (GBCC) in Buchanan.

A Foreign Ministry release says the fund will assist with the procurement of office equipment, including furniture to equip the college.

The AU Liberia Liaison Office Head of Mission, Prosper Addo, made the disclosure Saturday, January 28, 2017 during the launch of the AU Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy (PCRD) and African Solidarity Initiative (ASI) on the campus of the college in Buchanan.

The release said a Memorandum of Understanding, MOU to that effect was signed on the margins of ongoing AU 28th Ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

AU Commissioner for Peace and Security, Smail Chergui signed on behalf of the AU while Liberia’s Foreign Minister Marjon Kamara signed on behalf of her country.

According to the release, the MOU is within the framework of the AU Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development Policy (PCRD) and African Solidarity Initiative (ASI).

The College Interim President, Augurie Herring, described the gesture as “significant and timely” considering the need for an Information Communication and Technology (ICT) lab at the school.

Also speaking, Grand Bassa County Superintendent, Levi Demeh emphasized the institution’s focus on ensuring students have marketable skills.
