AFL must remain a neutral army during this election- Olusegun Obasanjo

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo is urging the Armed Forces of Liberia to remain a neutral army during the October General Elections.

The Former Nigerian President said, on no account should the Army be involved in non-military duties during the conduct of elections.

He maintained that there are lessons that the army should learn and avoid from the past; and called on personnel of the AFL to perform their duties in accordance with democratic values and human rights at all times and avoid segregation and unprofessional conducts.  

Mr. Obasanjo also underscored the need for the improvement of the army to better serve the nation.

He made the statement Saturday February 11, 2017 at the Barclay Training Center in Monrovia when he served as keynote speaker at the 60th Anniversary Celebration of Armed Forces of Liberia.

The former Nigerian leader also congratulated President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, for her outstanding leadership as chair of ECOWAS Heads of State and for the mediatory role she played during the recent Gambia election crisis.
