Murdered SAPO Ranger to be laid to rest Saturday in Grand Dedeh

MONROVIA-LIBERIA-The Management of the Forestry Development Authority (FDA) is in Grand Gedeh County to give a befitting burial to the fallen Forest Ranger, Friday Pyne of the Sapo National Park this Weekend.

Pyne one of his colleagues were attacked and brutalized in a mob action, by communities inhabitants on Thursday, April 27, 2017, in the park in Chebiorh Town, Sinoe  County, leading to the death of  on Ranger, Friday Pyne while on duty.

The Sapo Park is vulnerable from several communities surrounding the park that survival depends on the park through hunting animals and gold mining activities.

According to FDA Managing Director, Darlington Tuagben, said: “The FDA and its partners are prepared to contribute US$ 3,000.00 towards the burial of Ranger Pyne, and provide death benefit to the family of the deceased and those rangers who were victimized but survived from the mob attacked in park.”

Mr. Tuagben is heading a high level FDA Management delegation in Grand Gedeh County, to participate in the burial ceremony of Ranger Pyne, scheduled to take place Saturday, May 20, 2017 where he hailed from.

The Sapo National Park is the Liberia’s largest primary tropical protected rainforest and the second-largest rainforest in West Africa.

The FDA Managing Director, made the revelation Thursday, May 18, 2017 in an interview with elbcradio.com and intimated “the death of the Ranger Payne will not hinder the FDA and partners’ resolve to conserve Liberia’s wildlife and to improve the wellbeing of communities around the Sapo National Park.”

He described the fallen Ranger and other victimized in the recent mob action at Sapo National Park as heroes.

Mr. Tuagben said the Authority’s contribution towards the interment of Mr. Pyne and provision of benefits to his family as well as other victims are marks of celebrating them as heroes.

He called on the locals to support Government’s plan in empowering the communities to improve the livelihood of people there.

An investigation is currently being conducted by government to bring to book those responsible for the death and victimization of rangers and the constant invasion of the park.
