MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Public Health Institute has ordered the closure of fifty-five mineral water companies in Monrovia.

The decision, according to a release, was initiated following a thirty-day joint government agencies inspection of sachet water companies in Monrovia and its environs.

The release, signed by the Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia, Tolbert Nyensuah, said they were acting in line with Chapter Nineteen of the Public Health Law of Liberia which ensures that drinking water is free of contamination.

A total of one-hundred-twenty-five companies were inspected during the thirty-day exercise by a team comprising the ministries of Health, Commerce and Industries, Mines and Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency and others.

Mr. Nyensuah said:” The team is backed by a task force from the Ministry of Justice and will continue to enforce the closure order of the companies until they improve their facilities and services.”

The act establishing the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) has been signed into law by the president of Liberia, printed into hand bills and circulated to the public. NPHIL is now a legal entity in Liberia.
