The US Government has pledged 60(M) Million United States Dollars to support a regional counter-terrorism force in the Sahel, an area south of the Sahara Desert.

Groups linked to al-Qaeda and so-called Islamic State operates in the vast desert region.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said:” The money will bolster regional partners in their fight to ensure security and stability in the region.”
“This is a fight we must win, and these funds will play a key role in achieving that mission.”

The announcement came as the UN Security Council met to discuss how to draw up international support for the force set up by Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger.

US Ambassador Nikki Haley rejected proposals to allow the large UN peacekeeping mission in Malito help the joint force, saying its resources must not be overstretched.
