George Weah closes in to Presidency obtains 61.5%

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Liberia’s National Elections Commission (NEC) has announced released that 98 % results of the December 26, 2017 Run-Off Elections, favor Senator George M. Weah of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC).

The NEC Chairman, Jerome Korkoyah said: “Senator George Weah obtained 720,023 votes accounting for 61.5%, while the   governing Unity Party (UP) headed by Vice President Joseph N. Boakai, as flag bearer obtained the vote of about 450,088 accounting for 38.5 %”.

Chairman Korkoyah’s pronouncement represents the first preliminary result of the run-off election after the CDC and UP failed to obtain the required 50 plus one votes in the October 10, 2017.

He announced the results Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the NEC Headquarters in Monrovia. Eleven of Liberia’s 15 counties have already reported by 100%, besides Lofa, Margibi, Nimba and Sinoe Counties.

According to the NEC’s preliminary results, the CDC obtained 314,594 votes over all, acuminating to 62.9% with the UP obtaining 185,184 votes over all representing 37.1% so far.

Meanwhile, final respect is expected to be released Friday, December 29, 2017 by the NEC.

Mr.Weah became Africa’s first and only football to have won the FIFA Ballon d’ or is close to becoming the first man to have played football and win a nation Presidential election.

He retired from international football in 2002, when he declared his ambition to becoming President of the Liberia Football Association (LFA) in 2003, but football top brass then rejected him while he was President of a local club, Bassa Defender in 2006.
