MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Maryland County Representative, Bhofal Chambers, has been elected Speaker of the 54th Liberian Legislature.

The Pleebo Sodoken Lawmaker was elected on white ballot Monday during election for the speaker position.

Representative Chambers went unopposed Monday, January 15, 2018,at the National Legislature, as Grand Bassa County Representative, Hans Barchue, declined to stand in the race.

Election for the position of a new speaker of the legislature followed the vacancy created by the defeat of Margibi County Representative, Emmanuel Nuquay.

Mr. Nuquay, who replaced Bomi County Representative, Alex Tyler, as speaker,  ran on the ticket of the Unity Party as Vice-running mate to outgoing Liberia’s Vice President, Joseph Boakai, during the 2017 Presidential and Legislative Elections.

Dr. Chambers, initially a staunch member of the Unity Party and admirer of President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, crossed over to the CDC in 2011 after reportedly falling out with President Sirleaf.
