UN Deputy Secretary General visits Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Visiting United Nations Deputy Secretary General, Amina Mohammed, said the UN will remain active in Liberia beyond the departure of UNMI.

Madam Mohammed said:” UMIL is leaving Liberia but there are seventeen permanent agencies and partners in Liberia that will continue working with the people in the absence of the mission.”

She however said sustaining the international community’s investment in Liberia will require continue support from donors who have stood by Liberia over the years.

The UN Deputy Chief Scribe spoke Thursday, March 22, 2018, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs following a meeting with President George Manneh Weah.

Madam Mohammed then challenged the Government and its partners to address the issue of poverty, youth unemployment, illiteracy and the lack of basic infrastructures that connect the capital to the rest of the Country.

She also paid tribute to 202 personnel of UNMIL who lost their lives in the service of peace in Liberia.

For his part, President George Manneh Weah praised the UN Security Council and other international partners contributing greatly to the peace process in Liberia.

President Weah said:” Such contribution made it possible for the Government of Liberia to restore some basic services to its people over the years.”

President Weah thanked UNMIL on behalf of the people of Liberia for restoring peace to Liberia.
