Workshop on Custom and Border Security opens in Monrovia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A three day workshop on Custom and Border Security has formally opened at the Millennium Guest House in Monrovia.

It is also aimed at   curbing diamond smuggling and the implementation of the Mano River Regional Approach to the Kimberly Process National Action Plan

Speaking at the program Thursday, May 10, 2018, the Resident Representative and Coordinator of the Mano River Union Sub office, Christian Jallah, said participants are brainstorming to improve the Kimberly Process Certification on a regional level.

Mr. Jallah said the manual search to locate the quantity of illicit diamond the leaves the regions remains a challenge.

He however noted that plans are underway to bring new technology to assist border inspectors track illegal diamonds.

He said tracking illicit diamonds helps to generate revenue for regional governments in terms certification.

The Kimberley Process Regional Approach in the Mano River Union was established by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme in 2013.

The idea also supports Mano River Union countries meet the challenges of implementing the KP, with a regional dimension.

The Kimberley Process Regional Approach in the Mano River Union (Regional Approach)was established by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme in 2013 to support Mano River Union countries,Sierra Leone,Guinea,Cote d’Ivoire and Liberia to meet the challenges of implementing the KP with a regional dimension.

The regional approach aims at improving law enforcement, better secure diamond production and export secure government and ensures better valuation of mining communities.
