MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has given the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) 72-hour ultimatum to effect immediate Tariff reduction in Liberia.

President Weah further directs that the LRA presents a new schedule to ensure that tariffs on wide range of basic commodities imported into the country are reduced.

According to a release issued Thursday, May 24, 2018, the Liberian Leader observed that the current tariff regime, including the ECOWAS Common External Tariff (CET), is causing serious hike in the costs of basic commodities in the country.

The President also observed that the situation is adversely affecting the Liberian people, especially the poor.

The Liberian Leader deems the serious hike in the costs of basic commodities in the country as unacceptable and expressed that it contravenes the premise of the Pro-Poor Agenda.

President Weah vows to leave no stone unturned in making sure that basic goods on the Liberian market are affordable, and that the public is not strangulated by unreasonable high tariffs.

The current tariff regime implemented during the final days of the past government increased tariffs, in some cases, to as high as 40-percent.

The President has mandated the Commissioner-General of the Liberia Revenue Authority to report on his directive accordingly.
