MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah is requesting the National Legislature to pass a resolution for the holding of the bi-elections in Bong and Montserrado counties no later than July 31, 2018.

President Weah’s request is based on information from the National Elections Commission (NEC) that the electoral body is prepared to hold the bi-elections no later than July 31, 2018.

In separate communications to both houses of the Legislature on May 29,2018, President said a resolution from the lawmakers to hold the bi-elections is consistent with Article 34 (1) of the Constitution of Liberia.

According to Article 34 (1) of the Liberian Constitution, the National Legislature has the power to enact the elections laws of Liberia.

The Liberian Leader noted the constraints that led to delay in the process, but added that it is important to do everything possible to strengthen the Country’s democracy by holding the bi-elections in the time frame provided by the Constitution.

Following the reading of President Weah’s communication in the Senate’s Plenary, a motion from Gran Bassa County Senator, Jonathan Kaipay, was endorsed to discuss the communication in an Executive Session.
