VP Taylor wants Liberia create National Memorial

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Vice President Jewel Howard – Taylor is proposing the creation of a National Memorial.

Vice President Taylor said the memorial will be similar to that of Rwandan Memorial and the Israeli Holocaust.

She said the National Memorial in Liberia will reveal the fact and actual happenings of the past, mainly during the dark period in the country’s history.

Vice President Taylor said it will help to address critical issues affecting Liberia’s co – existence.

She made the assertion recently in Monrovia during the observance of International Archives Day.

The Liberian Vice President disclosed that the country’s history needs to be rewritten because there are disputes to the accuracy, like the death of President Edward J. Roye and the pioneer Matilda Newport.

“We have heard the story of President Edward James Roye rumored to have drowned in the river from been submerged and pulled down the depth of the water from the weight of the colossal bag of money which he had tied to his waist with the intent to absconding”, she pointed out.

For Matilda Newport, Vice President Taylor narrated, shows her heroism by wielding the fire from her pipe to light a canon that thundered out volleys which effectively halted invaders of her settlement, but said that there are some other accounts that have challenged this story.

Speaking further, she called for proper record keeping as it is vital in the preservation of Liberia’s rich heritage.

VP Taylor said the preservation of financial, cultural, legal and societal records will augur well Liberia if they glimpse with transparency and accountability.

She said as the authority, the Center for National Documents and Records Agency must ensure that various documents are properly kept.

VP Taylor said these documents, among others, will reveal the actual facts to Liberians and their unborn generations of what happened in the past.

She said besides, oral history must form a part of the Center for National Documents and Records Agency’s documentation.

Speaking earlier, the Agency’s Neileh Daitouah said his administration will focus on the decentralization it activities, construction of rural archive center and construction of a multi – purpose record center in Sinkor, among others.
