Liberia Chess Team off to Georgia for World Chess Olympiad

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-A Liberian Chess delegation is on its way to Georgia, the United States, to make its first appearance in the World Chess Olympiad.

The delegation comprises which five local chess stars and two officials departed the country Tuesday, September 18, 2018.

The five Candidate Masters (CM) representing Liberia are: Jacob Jallah, Tom Sawyer, Barcon Harmon, James Tondo and Thomas Saah.

The team won respective qualification slots in July this year after beaten various opponents in the Georgia Qualifier in Monrovia.

Speaking to ELBC SPORT just before they departed the country Tuesday, Liberia Chess Federation President William Thompson said:” The morale among the players was high and the team will make history at the Georgian Olympiad. “

He said the team’s coach, Thomas Kayiah, has been doing a fantastic job in preparing the players for the game.

Thompson said though it’s the country and the players first appearance at the World stage, Liberians can rest assure that the delegation will return in flying colors.

He praised the Government of Liberia through the Youth and Sports Ministry and Liberia Chess Founding President, now Finance Minister, Samuel Tweah, for the level of support to the Chess Federation and the team.

Mr. Thompson said: “The support of this trip came from the Govt. of Liberia, especially the President, Dr. George Manneh Weah, Our former President, current Finance Minister Samuel Tweah and Sports Minister Zeogar Wilson and his Deputy Andy Quimie for their massive support to the Chess Federation”.

The Liberia Chess Federation President said Liberia’s participation in this year’s Olympiad has opened a door for the country.

“Our participation has sent a signal out there that Liberia is among the nations that play Chess sport. We believe our participation will attract international partners to our country game,” added the Local Chess Boss.
