Liberia scores more wins at Chess Olympiad, Country’s rating improves

MONROVIA,LIBERIA-Liberia National Chess team has scored further wins at the ongoing Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, on the margins of the 43th Olympics Chess game.

Liberia scored two wins at the closed of last week beating Palau 4:0 and Aruba 3:1 in round five (or game 20) of the Georgia Olympiad.

So far, Liberia considered as underdog with almost all of its Chess Players unrated has recorded 9.5 points.

The performances and wins have improved Liberia’s rating in the World of Chess, with the country earlier not ranked, now ranked 135 in the world, 7th in Africa and 3rd in West Africa behind Nigeria and Mali.

The five representing Liberia at the Olympiad are; Jacob Jallah, Tom Sawyer, Barcon Harmon, James Tondo and Thomas Saah.

FM Barcon Harmon and CM Jacob Jallah are the only two rated Liberian Chess players, while the other three taste their first experience at an international. 

Speaking to ELBC Sports at the Weekend, Chess Federation President William Thompson praised the team for the efforts so far at the game in Georgia.

He said: “Liberia is drawing the World of Chess’ attention that we have potentials that have been hidden. The team is doing well. Even the games we lost, it was just because of experience. Our players had chances to win, but they were shattered.”

Also commenting on the team’s performance was the Founding President of the Liberia Chess Federation, now Finance Minister Samuel Tweah who described the team’s results so far as amazing.

Minister Tweah said he was happy that his dream for Chess is well alive and great things are happening for the Liberian Chess Federation.

He called on the Liberian Chess players to fight harder at the Olympiad to give Liberia a good ranking.

The Former Chess President also wants Chess Sport introduce in Liberian Schools.

The 43rd FIDE World Chess Olympiad is taking place from 24 September to 5 October 2018 in Batumi, Georgia. The biennial tournament is an 11-round Swiss open, with one rest day on 29 September.

The open section features 185 teams from 183 countries, with the 919 players, including almost the whole world chess elite, and there is also a women's division: 43rd Chess Olympiad (W) (2018).
