MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Country Team leader of the FAO Animal Disease Program wants Liberian authorities to do more in improving animal health in the country. FAO is the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Dr. Abebe Wolde said:” Animal health should be treated as a top priority because it has great impact on human health, agriculture and the environment.”

Dr. Wolde said what’s happening in the human health sector can be replicated in the animal health sector if Liberia is to achieve the One Health goal.

He was speaking Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at the start of a two day workshop intended to validate Liberia’s only animal disease surveillance plan.

The plan is to be implemented by an animal disease surveillance network under the auspices of the Ministry of Agriculture.

Also speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chief Veterinary Officer at the Ministry of Agriculture, Joseph Anderson, thanked the FAO and other partners for the continuous support to the Agriculture Ministry.

Anderson said the new plan now gives Liberia a working tool toward achieving the goal of the One Health Policy.
