MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Sustainable Development Institute (SDI) Tuesday launched the Round-Table on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) project in Liberia.

The project is titled Improving Communication and Understanding the RSPO Standard and Mechanisms in their Applications in Liberia and at the West Africa Level.

Giving the overview of the RSPO project, SDI Coordinator, Nora Bowier, said the Project seeks to create an improved understanding of the RSPO principles by Civil Society Organization (CSOs) and communities to lead to cohesive relationship between host communities and oil palm companies.

Madam Bowier said: The Project is also geared towards increasing actors working to bridge the gaps between local communities and oil palm companies operating in Liberia and elsewhere in the Sub-Region, and to foster constructive dialogue in the Oil palm sector.”

Serving as the Project’s Key launcher, National Bureau of Concessions Executive Director, Gregory Coleman, highlighted his entity’s commitment towards the principles of the RSPO.

At the same time, he is calling on concession companies to explore directly with the communities in which they operate, adding that the community dwellers need to feel the impacts of companies.

For his part, the RSPO Technical Manager for Africa, Elikplim Agbitor, cautioned concession companies operating in Liberia to always resolve conflicts in the Country whenever they arise and not to allow same spread to the international level.
