Ebola virus discovered in bat in Nimba County, no cause for alarm-Nyenswah

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Tolbert Nyenswah, says the Zaire string of the Ebola virus has been discovered in a bat in Sanniquellie-Mahn, Nimba County.

Mr. Nyenswah said:” The virus was discovered during a test conducted for Ebola virus among five-thousand bats.”

He said the test was done from 2016 to 2017 and the result from the exercise has just been concluded.

Mr. Nyenswah said:” Despite the discovery, Liberians should have no fear as there is not any outbreak of the virus in the Country.”

He said Liberia is ten times safer than the last three years and there is a high level of public health mechanisms put in place to keep the Country safe.

Director Nyenswah said there has been huge progress made in Liberia’s health sector in the last one year, and over the period health authorities were able to respond to 48 outbreaks of various diseases across the Country.

Mr. Nyenswah spoke Thursday, January 24, 2019, at a MICAT Press Conference.
