Safer marine environment conference kicks off in Liberia

MONROVIA, LIBERIA - A four day Blue Ocean conference aims at securing a safer marine environment, in collaboration with the Government of Liberia and its partners, has opened in Monrovia.

The Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Nathaniel Blama, said: “It is not good for citizens to continue using the ocean as a dumping site because the Atlantic Ocean remains a major source of the livelihood of citizens”.

The EPA Director also stressed the need for proper management of Liberia’s ecosystem, noting that when the ecosystem is managed properly it will maximize the benefit of the Ocean.

He   spoke Monday, March 18, 2019 ,at the opening of a press conference marking the start of the Blue Oceans Conference at a local hotel in Monrovia. The conference is expected to last until March 21, 2019.

Also speaking, the Country Director of Conservation International, Jennifer Dollovan-Allen, pledged her organization’s commitment to working with the Government of Liberia to achieve a safer marine environment.

The Blue Ocean Conference taking place for the first time in Liberia brings together delegates from West Africa and other countries around the World.
