USA-The Association of Liberian Journalists in the Americas (ALJA) is urging US President Donald Trump to extend the Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) temporary immigration benefit for Liberians.

ALJA in a dispatch issued Friday, March 22, 2019 said: “Ending the immigration benefit will cause many Liberians in the US severe emotional and economic hardship, many Liberians whom have resided in the US for more than 20 years are well integrated in their local communities and have established families”.

ALJA said they have bought homes and are making significant contributions to different aspects of the American society.

The release said unemployment and challenges of social services in Liberia, will even worsen the situation if thousands of Liberians are made to involuntarily return if the (DED) is not extend.

Thousands of Liberian (DED) beneficiaries are expected to leave the United States or becoming undocumented when the temporary immigration benefit expires on March 31, 2019.

Meanwhile, ALJA said it will work with congress to grant those Liberians on (DED) a more permanent status.
