MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Transitional Justice Working Group in Liberia (TJWG), has backed calls for the establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court in  the country.

The civil society group is also calling for the full implementation of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) recommendations to prosecute individuals who committed heinous crimes against humanity.

Speaking at a press conference Monday, April 1, 2019, the Board Chair of the TJWG, James Yarsiah, cautioned Liberians to support the two processes and denounce the culture of impunity.

Mr.Yarsiah differed from some Liberians who perceived the process as counter-productive to peace sustenance and believes that the process is critical to the national reunification of the Country.

He, however, lauded government’s efforts towards the peace building process and reminded Liberians that there can be no peace and reconciliation without justice.

Among other things, the group also recommends that national and international stakeholders support the resumption of a national dialogue on transitional justice in Liberia.

The TJWG is also recommending that the Executive Branch of government resumes the implementation of the TRC report and make quarterly report as outline in the Act of the TRC, while the Independent Human Rights Commission (INHCR) ensures  that all the TRC recommendations are implemented.

Recently the Liberian Bar Association also endorsed the setting up of a War and Economic Crimes Court and the implementation of the TRC’s recommendations.
