CESTOS CITY, RIVERCESS COUNTY, LIBERIA-As journalists in Liberia celebrate World Press Freedom Day, the Press Union of Liberia has honored President George Manneh Weah for decriminalizing speech offences in Liberia,

The award was given by PUL President Charles Coffey to Information Minister Eugene Nagbe for onward delivery to President Weah.

According to our Correspondent, the award was bestowed upon the Liberian Leader at the official World Press Freedom Day taking place in Cestos City, Rivercess County.

More than two-hundred journalists from across the Country and some officials of government are celebrating the day.

Speaking to ELBC Friday, May 3, 2019, from Cestos City via mobile phone earlier, PUL President Charles Coffey said:” The condition of the press has generally improved as evident, not just by the rise of media houses, but also efforts by government and media partners to degenerate the media landscape.”

Mr. Coffey said improvement was made possible through the workings of local and international partners, the cooperation of the Weah –led Administration.

He said this year’s World Press Freedom Day celebration is under the local theme: Celebrating the Decentralization of Press Offences in Liberia.

The PUL Boss said the theme is also in agreement with societal norms and with the Liberian media struggle to ensure free speech and freedom of the press among others.

Mr. Coffey then praised President George Weah, the various branches of Government and others for the repealing of laws that incriminate free speech in the Country.
