MONROVIA, LIBERIA-Ahead of the July 8, 2019, By-Elections in Montserrado County, the Government of Liberia has promised to shoulder the financial responsibility to pay the registration fees for those who lost their voters cards in Montserrado County.

The intervention by Government came in the wake of complaints and appeals by some political parties, including some eligible voters’ inability to pay five United States Dollars as fees for lost card, as enshrined in the elections laws of Liberia.

According to the Chairman of the National Elections Commission (NEC), Cllr. Jerome Korkoya, the latest move by the National Government will allow the Commission to extend the previous June 25, 2019 expiration time to June 27, 2019, this Thursday.

He said: “Though the development by government is laudable, it has now put them under more pressure to work over time. However, he was quick to point out that NEC committed to working in time and to achieve the desire goals.”

Speaking to reporters, Cllr. Korkoya noted that as a result of the timely intervention of government, they now have additional center from the previous two to three, to ensure the process is fast and effective.

The NEC Boss, however, clarified that the Commission will not refund monies paid by some people prior to the intervention of Government, adding that they acted in line with the constitutional provision guiding the NEC.

He used the occasion to reiterate previous calls to political parties, candidates and supporters to ensure the process is peaceful and civil, void of disturbances.

Meanwhile, the National Headquarters of the NEC on 9th Street in Sinkor, and sub-centers in Bentol and Brewerville are centers for the registration of lost voters’ cards, which is currently ongoing.

With Government’s intervention, it is expected that eligible voters who lost their cards will take advantage of the process, to ensure they exercise their democratic and constitutional rights to vote on July 8, 2019 in the coming Senatorial and Representative By-elections in Montserrado County.

Currently, as per the elections time table, campaign is ongoing across Montserrado County.

The two By-Elections for Montserrado County came as a result of the deaths of former Senator Geraldine Doe Sheriff and former Representative Adolph Lawrence of District fifteen Montserrado County.
