MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) says aliens from other ECOWAS member states are the most illegal residents in Liberia.

Commissioner Robert Budy said:” The LIS is facing serious challenge from persons from the ECOWAS region to obtain or regularize their status.”

According to Commissioner Budy, people from non ECOWAS countries are however in compliance with the alien laws of the Country.

He spoke Wednesday, July 17, 2019, at a one day Alien Naturalization Awareness Program at the Commercial Hub of Red Light in Paynesville.

Commissioner Budy attributed the situation to flexibility in the ECOWAS Protocol on free trade and movement of goods and citizens of the sub-region.

Commissioner Budy is urging aliens who do not have legal status to begin the process of obtaining legal residential permit.

Meanwhile, Commissioner Budy clarified that at no time did the LIS suspend the naturalization process.

The LIS Boss’s clarification comes following complaints by some aliens that they were informed that the process of naturalization has been suspended.

He said the LIS is always ready to begin documenting anyone interested in naturalizing as a Liberian citizen.
Commissioner Budy wants interested aliens meet the requirements and obtained every legal document before the naturalization process.

Responding to the LIS Commissioner’s statement, most of the aliens, mainly from the ECOWAS region, promised to work closely with the LIS Boss to obtain legal permit.
