Nat’l Legislature begins Draft Nat’l Budget hearings

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The National Legislature has commenced hearings into the revenue component of the 2019/2020 Draft National Budget.

According to ELBC’s Legislative Reporter, the Ministry of Finance Development Planning, Liberia Revenue Authority and the National Port Authority are in attendance.
The exercise is being conducted by the Joint Committees on Ways, Means, Finance and Public Accounts of both Houses.

Prior to the hearings, the heads of Government Ministries and State-owned Enterprises have been requested to submit copies of their 2018/2019 Budget Performance Repors,income statements, statements of cash flows, statements of retain earnings, among others.

The Budget Hearings followed the submission of the 2019/2020 Draft National Budget by the Executive in the tune of 532 Million United States Dollars.

Meanwhile, the Director of Press at the House of Representatives, Isaac Redd, is calling for improved Governance, mainly in the fiscal management system of Liberia.

He said:” It is time for Public Corporations, including the National Port Authority, Liberia Telecommunications Authority, National Social Security Corporation and others to be more accountable to the National Legislature.”

The Director of Press is at the same time urging Cabinet Ministers and heads of agencies of Government to be prepared in defending their respective budgets during this budget hearing process.

The House Spokesman noted that the current budget has the potential to jump-start the Country’s economy and put it on par in terms of growth and development.
