ECOWAS’ Heads of State, Gov’t ready to fight terrorism

MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President George Weah has returned home from the ECOWAS Extra-ordinary Summit of the Authority of Heads of State and Government where they have committed US$1Billion to fight terrorism in the region.

The Liberian leader described terrorism as a global situation that demand concerted efforts of African leaders and said the US$1Billion is expected to fund the fight against terrorism and extremism in the ECOWAS region from 2020 to 2024.

According to President Weah, “The fight against terrorism in the sub -region has over the years been undermined by limited funding, but West African Leaders have recommitted themselves to stop the increasing wave of jihadist violence in the region”.

President Weah and his ECOWAS’ counterparts took the decision Saturday, September 14, 2019, during the Regional Extraordinary Session on Terrorism held in Burkina Faso.

Mr. Weah made the disclosure Sunday, September 15, 2019 at the Georgia Pattern United Methodist Church in Monrovia following his return from Burkina Faso.
