MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Civil Law Court on Monday, September 16, 2019, issued Writ of Contempt charges on several institutions for their alleged failure to submit names of their employees to serve as jurors of the Court.

The Court’s Sheriff has been ordered to produce the living bodies of Deputy and Assistant Ministers, as well as Managing Directors and other authorities of the concerned ministries and agencies.

The affected institutions are Foreign Affairs, Youth and Sports, and the Finance ministries, the Liberia Land Authority (LRA) Liberia Institute of Statistics and Geo Information Services (LIGIS).

They are to appear in Court on September 18,2-10 to show why they should not be held in contempt.

The Supreme Court of Liberia emphasized that it will back subordinate courts to summon heads of organizations for failing to send their employees to perform as jurors.

During the opening of the Civil Law Court, Associate Justice Sianeh Yuoh stressed that the Supreme Court does not beg for permission, rather for courtesy.

Justice Yuoh said:” The Court is complying with the Jury Law amended in 2012 by the National Legislature which clarified that employees’ salaries be paid, while performing their statutory duty as jury.”
