BRAC trains women to be self-sufficient

MARGIBI COUNTY, LIBERIA-Several women in Horton and Sherman farms, Margibi County, are benefiting from BRAC-Liberia Ultra-Poor Graduation Program.

The women were trained in livestock rearing, including goats, sheep and pigs small businesses, among others, and were also trained to manage village savings, crop production and provided a by-weekly food stipend to last for five months and at the same time provided the livestock as their own.

The program is a three-year pilot program with funding from the Dutch Postcode Lottery, and is being implemented in Bong and Margibi Counties.

The objective is to empower about seven-hundred-fifty women households heads living in Ultra Poverty to economic self-reliance into a sustainable future.

Meanwhile, Assistant Gender Minister for Research and Planning, Roosevelt Klafleh, has commended BRAC-Liberia for imparting the lives of ordinary Liberians through the Ultra-Poor Graduation Program being implemented in Horton and Shearman Farms.

Minister Klafleh said:” The training of women in livestock rearing, goat, sheep small businesses, crop production, and others is effectively up grading the lives of poor people in consonance with government’s Pro-Poor Agenda.

Speaking recently in Margibi County during monitoring tour of BRAC-Liberia Ultra- Poor Graduation Program, Minister Klafleh called on beneficiaries to utilize the skills acquired from the program to improve their lives.

Also speaking, the Director of Livestock at the Ministry of Agriculture, Joseph Anderson, urged the women to consider the selection by BRAC as a gracious opportunity.

The program is being implemented in Bong and Margibi Counties.

The approach, commonly referred to as the “Graduation approach” is a time bound, sequenced and integrated intervention carefully designed to meet the need of the ultra-poor.

It has five pillars; consumption support, savings, asset transfer, technical skills training, and regular life skills coaching.
