MOROVIA,LIBERIA-Fishermen in four of Liberia’s fifteen counties stand to benefit from a fishery grant agreement for the supply of four–hundred motorized Yamaha engines free of charge.

According to a release issued Monday, October 7, 2019, the Governments of Japan and Liberia signed the agreement to benefit local artisanal fishermen in Montserrado, Grand Cape Mount, Grand Bassa and Rivercess Counties.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), Emma Glassco, commended the Japanese Government for the donation.

The release said Mrs. Glassco assured the donor government that they will be used to improve artisanal fishermen’s catch and subsequently phase out paddling canoes.

She described fishing as a vital socio-economic activity of thousands of Liberians, emphasizing that fishing-related activities immensely contribute to the livelihoods of tens of thousands more.
