President signs Power Theft Bill into law

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-President George Weah has signed into law the amended Power Theft Act submitted by the National Legislature.

The National Legislature recently amended Chapter 15 of the Penal Law adding Section 15.88 making power theft a state crime.

Addressing the Executive Mansion regular press briefing Tuesday, October 8, 2019, Deputy Presidential Press Secretary Smith Toby said the document is expected to be printed into handbill soon.

Mr. Smith said:” The bill prohibits theft of electricity through illegal connections, tempering with meters, transmission and distribution lines.”

When implemented, Mr. Toby said the law will help reduce power theft and increase revenue generation at the Liberia Electricity Corporation.

At the same time President George Weah has signed into law an Act supporting Government’s ongoing salary harmonization exercise.

The Act is entitled: “The National Remuneration standardization Act of 2019.”

Mr. Smith Toby said the document supports the harmonization of salaries, allowances and benefits of all public officials and civil servants.

When printed into handbill, Mr. Toby said that the law will ensure that salaries and benefits of government employees are just according to their work.

He said that the document seeks to close the gap in salary disparity and stop the mismanagement of public resources.
