Information Ministry to appear before Civil Law Court

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-The Civil Law Court has summoned the Ministry of Information to appear on Thursday, October 17, 2019, for Action of Declarative Judgment.

The Writ of Summons is based on complaint filed by Media Incorporated, Punch FM for permit and frequency given by the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) and the Ministry.

In a twelve-count petition, Punch FM through its legal team, said on November 9, 2017, upon legally obtaining a business registration permit from the Ministry of Information to operate a radio and television institution in Liberia,it applied to the LTA.

According to court records, One Media House, through its commissioner Henry Benson did apply to the LTA for radio and television frequencies, an application that was later granted by the Authority.

The court records also showed that one-hundred United States Dollars was paid to the LTA as application fee for a commercial FM station (FM 106.3) in Montserrado County and two-thousand-eight-hundred United States Dollars as annual license regulatory fee.

The legal documents also indicate that the fee covered the period from January 1 to December 31, 2018, and show copies of invoices and payment receipts of the total amount two-thousand-nine-hundred United States Dollars.

The Information earlier announced that it was suspending all new licenses and authorizations issued media operators from January 1 to June 18, 2018, but since the announcement, according to the court, new radio stations have been given licenses to operate, with the exception of Punch FM.

Meanwhile, the Court has ordered the Information Ministry to file its resistance within ten days upon receipt of the writ.
