EU Ambassador says abolition of death penalty worldwide is key…

MONROVIA, LIBERIA-European Union (EU) Ambassador to Liberia, Helene Cave’, has described the abolition of death penalty worldwide as a key priority of the EU Human Rights Policy.

Ambassador Cave’ encouraged Countries, including Liberia, to ratify or comply with the 1989 Second Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights to abolish death penalty.

According to her, the number of countries, which abolished death penalty in their laws for all crimes, grew significantly between 1993 and 2018 from 106 to 142.

She disclosed that 84 Countries, including Liberia, were party to the Second Optional Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

In observance of International Day against death Penalty, the EU Envoy told a gathering Tuesday in Monrovia that, compliance to the law, would ensure the protection of rights to life and human dignity.
