Dev. of vibrant, sustained Intellectual Property Org. is bedrock to Africa’s Economic Growth

FARMINGTON HOTEL, LOWER MARGIBI COUNTY, LIBERIA-A senior staff of the World Intellectual Property Organization says the development of a vibrant and sustained Intellectual property is the bedrock for economic growth in Africa.

Mr. Maxwell Okore said:” There is a need to develop and maintain an effective Intellectual Property system to create jobs to meet the population demand in Africa.”

Making remarks at the ongoing annual meeting of ARIPO Administrative and Ministerial Council Meeting, Mr. Okore challenged African policy makers to re-direct their focus on Intellectual Property development to create more jobs.

According to him, developing intellectual property must not be seen as compliance but also an opportunity to transform the African economies.

Speaking Thursday, November 21, 2019, at the forum in Marbigi County, Mr. Okore said creating jobs for the people of Africa through the Intellectual Property Systems is one of the core objectives of the African Union Agenda 2063.

Meanwhile, the Director General of the African Intellectual Property Organization, Dennis Bowoso called for concerted effort to improve the IP systems in Africa.

Mr. Bowoso said the primary focus of the Intellectual Property systems is to promote economic growth and technological innovation on the continent.

He welcomed the collaboration between the African Intellectual Property organization, OIP and African Regional Intellectual Property Organization.

Mr. Bowoso said developing the IP systems in Africa will also promote social development of African States.
