(mylbsonline/Liberia)-The National Elections Commission (NEC) has announced Liberty Party Candidate, Nyonblee Kangar-Lawrence winner of the senatorial by-election in Grand Bassa County.

She now replaces John Francis Whitfield, who died early this year.

mylbsonline correspondent quotes the National Elections Commission (NEC) as saying: “The NEC announced its final results in the Senatorial bi-election   of  Nyonblee Kangar-Lawrence  emerging as winner of the election, with 11,000 votes totaling 41% ahead of her competitors”.

According to our reporter in the City, Candidate Daniel Chea pulled 9,902 votes, totaling 34%,  Unity Party’s Jonathan Kaipay collected 5,899 votes totaling 22%, while National Patriotic Party’s Wah Bedell  pulled 801votes totaling 3 % all the 336 polling places in the county.

The mood in Buchanan City, following the Thursday May 9, 2013 announcement, speaks of widespread jubilations and celebrations by supporters of the opposition Liberty Party and well wishers.

Our correspondent, Wednesday quoted NEC’s provisional result that had put the former defense minister ahead of his rivals with 7,566 votes, totaling 44.2%, but he is yet to concede defeat.

Mr. Chea was defense minister under former president Charles Ghankay Taylor, who is facing a 50 years jail sentence for war crimes and crimes against humanity in The Hague.
