(mylbsonline/Liberia)-Catholic Archbishop, Michael Kpakala Francis is dead.

According to Archbishop Lewis Zeegla, Archbishop Francis died Sunday morning at his 8th Street residence in Sinkor.
Archbishop Zeegla said: “Archbishop Michael Kpakala Francis fell ill in March 2004 and later died, following nine years of illness.”

“The 77-year Archbishop became a priest in 1963 and eventually became Archbishop of Monrovia in 1981,” he noted.

Archbishop Francis resigned February 2011 for reasons of age, after serving the Catholic Church for 20 years as Bishop.

During his reign as Archbishop of the Monrovia Archdiocese, he was a strong advocate for human rights in Liberia.

Archbishop Francis won the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award in 1999 for his advocacy for the rights of Liberian and non-Liberian citizens.

He was born February 12, 1936 in Kakata District, now Margibi County.
