(mylbsonline/Liberia)-The Sierra Leonean Government has paid tribute to the Mano River Basin women for their efforts leading to the restoration of peace in the West African Region.

Sierra Leonean President, Ernest Bai Koroma, said: “In the midst of numerous challenges in the MRU Community, women preserved, showed commitment and helped keep the region together.”

“During the crisis in the MRU Basin, women stood for peace and ensured that the men went to the peace table and commanded the nations to embrace democracy and peace,” he also noted.

President Koroma spoke recently in Freetown when he officially opened a three-day MRU Conference on energy and gender.

According to him, the women empowerment and energy access were his government’s two major priorities.

Also speaking at the conference, a former member of the National Transitional Assembly (TLA) of Liberia stressed the need for women empowerment in all sectors of society.

Madam Ruth Caesar refuted perceived notion that the men allowed a women to become President of Liberia.

She urged women in the MRU Basin to always compete with their male counterparts in all areas of life, despite the disadvantages.
The conference brought together more than two hundred women from the Basin, including Liberia.

It was held under the theme, “Women Empowerment through access to Energy.”
