National Port Authority dedicates new Pearl

By Richmond Paye

(mylbsonline/Liberia)-The newly rehabilitated Marginal Wharf at the Free Port of Monrovia has been dedicated and turned over to the National Port Authority (NPA).

The dedication and turning over ceremony of the US$15m rehabilitated Marginal Wharf took place Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at the NPA.

Speaking at the program, President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf expressed satisfaction over the quality of work done at the Free Port of Monrovia.

President Johnson-Sirleaf then called for closer collaboration with the APM Terminal Management.

“The signing of the agreement to rehabilitate the APM
Terminal was important to the economic viability of Liberia,
because the NPA Pearl was in a dangerous situation that almost caused it to collapse,” the President said.
The Liberian Leader also noted: “More needs to be done to rehabilitate the entire Free Port of Monrovia.”

The rehabilitation of the facility will enhance the capacity of the Port in handling bigger incoming vessels, especially for offloading and reloading purposes.

The project was under the auspices of the Liberian Government and the APM Terminal Management.

The Marginal Wharf is a significant portion of the Free Port of Monrovia, where all incoming ships offload and reload their cargoes.
