(mylbsonline/Liberia)-The mortal remains of renowned Nigerian author, Chinua Achebe, are due to be buried in his home town in Anambra state.

Mr. Achebe will be buried in Ogidi, a small town in the hills of Anambra State later Thursday, May 23, 2013.

Mr. Achebe died at age 82, in Boston, the United States (US) in March, 2013, following a brief illness.

His body arrived in Nigeria Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from Boston and relatives, officials, cultural groups, and other well-wishers were at the Enugu airport in southern Nigeria as the coffin was lowered from the plane.

Mr. Achebe is widely regarded as the founding father of modern African literature in English.

His 1958 debut novel, “Things Fall Apart”, dealt with the impact of colonialism in Africa, and was sold more than 10-million copies.

The Nigerian writer and academician went on to write more than 20 works, some of them  fiercely critical of politicians and what he described as a failure of leaderships in his native Nigeria.

Mr. Achebe had lived in the US since 1990 after a car crash that left him partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair, returning to Nigeria frequently.

BBC’s Will Ross in Enugu said: “Though people are mourning, the life of the influential Nigerian writer is also being celebrated.”
