(mylbsonline/Liberia)-The Liberian Government has begun the construction of a new central prison in Cheesemanburg, Montserrado County.

The new central prison project is being carried out in collaboration with UNDP and will replace the Monrovia Central Prison upon completion.

According to Assistant Justice Minister for Rehabilitation, Hilary Sirleaf, the New Central Prison, being funded by UNDP, will accommodate more inmates than the Monrovia Central Prison.

Speaking to ELBC via mobile phone from Cheesmanburg, the Assistant Justice Minister said: “The new Central Prison will be constructed in several phases.”

For his part, the Acting Chairman of the Independent National Human Rights Commission, Boakai Dukuly, told mylbsonline that he and other commissioners recently inspected the new prison site to ensure that it meets international standards.
