(mylbsonline/Liberia)-South African President, Jacob Zuma, says Nelson Mandela is responding to treatment in hospital.

Mr. Zuma told Parliament: “I was happy with progress being made by Mr. Mandela after few days of difficulties.”

The 94-year old is spending his fifth day in a Pretoria hospital suffering from a recurrent lung infection.

Mr. Mandela’s wife, Grace Michel, his daughter and two granddaughters visited him Wednesday, June 12, 2013.

“We had been deeply touched by the concern shown for Mr. Mandela’s health,” a statement from the family said.

The former South African President’s failing health is an intensely personal issue for many of those now involved in the “distressing” task of managing the flow of information from a Pretoria hospital bed to a “waiting world.”

“The families have been heartened by the overwhelming messages of support from the public,” the AFP quoting President Zuma said.

Mr. Zuma added: “Wednesday was the 49th anniversary of Mr. Mandela being sentenced to life imprisonment under the Apartheid regime.”

Tuesday, June 11, 2013, Mr. Zuma had described Mr. Mandela’s condition as “very serious, but stabilized.”
