(mylbsonline.com/Liberia)-Two international research institutes have agreed to rebuild Liberia’s rice and cassava research capacities at the Central Agricultural Research Institute (CARI) in Bong County.

The agreement was signed Friday, July 12, 2013 in Monrovia between the Ministry of Agriculture, Africa Rice Center (ARC) and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

Africa Rice Center would provide research direction to CARI in the National Rice Development Program, while the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture would concentrate on the National Cassava Strategy.

Agriculture Minister, Florence Chenoweth, signed on behalf of the Liberian Government, while Dr. Amare Tegbaru and Dr. Akintayo Inoussa, signed on behalf of IITA and ARC respectively.

Minister Chenoweth expressed disappointment over CARI’s deplorable condition and called for more support to make the initiative a reality.

She said: “Most of CARI’s activities are being funded by the ministry without budgetary support.”

The Agriculture Minister then lauded the West African Agriculture Productivity Program (WAAPP) for its continued support to CARI.
