Govt clarifies proceedings in Journalist Siehs libel case

(mylbsonline.com/Liberia)-The Liberian Government has clarified proceeding in the case involving former Agriculture Minister, Chris Toe and Publisher of the FrontPage Africa newspaper, Rodney Sieh.

According to a release, the case was filed by Mr. Toe against defendant Sieh for libel damage in the amount of US$2m.

Government said: “At the close of the trial, the Civil Law Court rendered judgment in favor of Dr. Toe in the tone of US$1.5m.”

“Mr. Sieh accepted the judgment and took an appeal to the Supreme Court of Liberia.”

Government also clarified that the Judiciary requires that the party announcing the appeal, files Bill of Exception, Appeal Bond and notice of completion for the appeal process to the court in which Mr. Sieh’s lawyers did not adhere to.

Government further said: “The proceedings were in line with Liberia’s judicial laws, which call for filling of the Bill of Cost and issuance of Writ of Execution on the defendant.”

“As a matter of law, Mr. Sieh was brought before the court to identify assets upon which execution could be affected, but he told the court: “I have no money to pay for perfect proceedings.”

According to the Civil Procedure Law of Liberia, Chapter 44.71, judgment in any of the following actions shall be enforceable by execution.
