(mylbsonline.com/Liberia)-President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has, by proclamation, declared Saturday, August 24, 2013 as ‘National Flag Day.’

The day is to be observed throughout the country as a National Holiday.

The Day is in consonance with an Act of the National Legislature of October 25, 1915 declaring August 24 each year as National Flag Day.

The Proclamation also notes: “It is important and befitting that the Day is commemorated annually to remind Liberians of their allegiance and loyalty to the National Ensign, and to encourage National Pride and Patriotism.

The National Ensign is the embodiment of Liberia’s national existence as a sovereign Entity.”

President Johnson-Sirleaf has meanwhile directed the Education Ministry and all other government agencies concerned to execute appropriate programs befitting the Day.

The Liberian Leader then called on all citizens and foreign residents alike within the country’s borders to give prominence to the Day’s observance throughout the country by flying the National Flag from each dwelling and public buildings and by closing all government offices, public places and business houses on the Day.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has released the timetable of events leading to the observance of the 166th anniversary of the Liberian National Flag.

The ministry, in a release, said: “Several students and youth groups will parade the streets of Monrovia, beginning in the morning, to the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, where the Liberian Leader and an array of government officials will receive the Pass-In-Review.”

An indoor program will be held at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, where the Director General of the Gabriel Dennis Foreign Service Institute, Dr. Augustine Kanneh, will deliver the oration.

The theme for this year’s Flag Day celebration is “The Flag, The Symbol of the Nation, and The Pride of Liberia.”
