UNICEF launches appeal to raise US$ 7M for Liberia

( is spearheading a campaign to generate US$7m for Liberia.

The amount is intended to support initiative, aimed at reversing chronic malnutrition among women and children in the country.

UK’s UNICEF President, Paddy Ashdown, said: “During my visit to Liberia last year, along with UNICEF vice president, we were encouraged by the political will of the Liberian Government to scale up nutrition interventions as a national priority”.

“The appeal I launched is aimed at cutting down acute malnutrition by half in five years and creating model that can be replicated in other African Countries,” he added.

Addressing his audience at the launch via video link,  President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf said: “Under five child mortality declined by 68% between 1990 and 2011, a rate more than most countries in Africa”.

She noted: “Though the statics is encouraging, more needs to be done to address the high condition that affects the cognitive development of children and deprive them from developing their capacities”.

“Improving nutrition, especially for women and children, is a critical tool in reducing poverty, and providing sustainable social and economic development,” she also noted.
