(mylbsonline.com/Liberia/Sept. 30/ 2013)-President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf has received the 2013 Global Citizen Award for campaigning the cause of gender equality.

According to an Executive Mansion release, President Johnson-Sirleaf received the award at the weekend at Central Park’s Great Lawn in New York.

The Liberian Leader received the honor before a crowd comprising more than 60-thousand people who attended this year’s Global Citizen Festival.

Introducing the President was one of the Liberian Leader’s biggest fans, U2’s Bono, a musician and philanthropist.

Madam Bono described President Johnson-Sirleaf as the most “extraordinary, the toughest of minds and tenderness of hearts.”

She said: “I am proud of the role women have played in the change and development of Liberia.”

“Acting as a non-violent political force, Liberian women were at the forefront of the efforts that ended the civil conflict, and they continue to be leaders in the community on issues from education, health care to the economy,” U2’s Bono also noted.
