(mylbsonline.com/Liberia/Sept. 30/2013)-United states Ambassador to Liberia, Deborah Malac, wants the media conduct thorough coverage of the Extractive Industries.

Ambassador Malac believes, if the media thoroughly covers the Extractive Industries, public awareness will be raised and constructive discussions facilitated to provide the way forward.

The US Ambassador spoke Monday, September 30, 2013 at the start of a week-long workshop.

The workshop is intended to educate local journalists on mining oil and gas, as well as on the country’s revenues and resources.

She said: “The media has an important role in promoting good governance and responsible natural resource management.”

The US diplomat reminded journalists that incomplete and inaccurate reportage of developments in these sensitive sectors can inflame tension and complicate efforts to reach consensus in some cases.

“Revenues from the oil, gas and mineral sectors are difficult for governments to manage effectively, transparently and inclusively,” Ambassador Malac also noted.

She said: “Liberia, an emerging producer in the Extractive Industries, has an opportunity to ensuring that the natural resource revenues are properly managed for the benefit of its people.”
