( Liberian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to the country’s housing sector improvement.

Vice President (VP), Joseph Boakai, said: “Addressing the issue of housing shortage and improving the facility’s affordability remains a major part of government’s national policy to alleviate poverty and improving the lives of the citizenry.

VP Boakai made the statements Monday, October 7, 2013 at the opening of a two- day urban housing sector profile validation workshop.

“Housing constitutes one of the four basic requirements for human survival, including food and clothing,” he further noted.

“Housing shortage has always been a major problem; an issue he attributed to the country’s civil war,” the Vice President added.

The Liberian Vice President is meanwhile calling on stakeholders and citizens to assist in improving the country’s housing sector.

He added: “It is a catalyst for change in the social, culture and economic development of Liberia.”

The workshop was supported by the National Housing Authority (NHA) and the United Nations HABITAT in Monrovia.

Also speaking at the workshop’s opening ceremony, the Managing Director of the National Housing Authority (NHA), Samuel Thompson, emphasized the importance of the housing sector, but regretted the level of neglect to the  sector.

Mr. Thompson said: “The provision of decent housing facilities is a major component of employment and of improving national security.”
