( Oct. 15/2013) Liberia will join the rest of the world Tuesday, October 15, 2013 to observe Global Hand Washing Day.

October 15, each year, is globally celebrated as Global Hand Washing Day. The celebration is aimed at raising awareness on the importance of hand washing to prevent diseases.

In a release, the Liberia WASH Consortium called on Liberians to form part of the campaign by sharing information on the health benefits of hand washing.

The WASH Consortium noted: “Washing hands with soap, or ashes is the most effective and least expensive way of preventing water-borne diseases.”

“Hand washing with soap, or ashes can help prevent diarrhea, pneumonia, and other diseases that deny many children the opportunity of reaching their 5th birthday,” the group said.

Each year, over 200 million people joined in the celebrations in over 100 countries around the world.

Global Hand Washing is endorsed by an array of governments, international institutions, civil society organizations, NGOs, private companies, and individuals.

The 2013 observance of the day will be held under the theme: “Clean Hands Save Lives.”
